Let’s Talk MVS Decommissioning Webinar FAQs

Q: I need expert help to get through this project.  How do I get help?

A: ITS is available to provide assistance to help you gain the necessary expertise to handle the files.   E-Mail helpdesk@niu.edu to request assistance.

Q: What about those of us who inherited these files and are not a mainframe user, but might need to keep the data?

A: ITS can help you learn the necessary tasks: access, reformat, ftp.  Keep in mind that you will be responsible for deciding whether or not to retain a file and whether or not the file contains sensitive data.  Additionally, you will have to provide the new location to store the file, for example: department server.

Q: Will the FTP process be used to move the legacy data for the Student Financial Aid system named Financier?

A: The process described in the presentation is not appropriate for Financier which has a database backend. We have accounted for that data apart from the ftp process in the MVS Decommissioning project.  However, some Financial Aid staff have files for which the process is appropriate.

Q: Are there going to be more outages/slowdowns on MVS over the next month?

A: There is scheduled outage for 1/29 at 6 am, and another one for late Feb. There will notifications sent via the LanAdmin listserv and in this case we will also mail to all MVS file holders of record.
