How busy is the NIU network right now?

Speed Test - How fast is my own connection right now?

How slow is too slow? Run the speed test several times, recording the speed each time, and then contact the ITS Helpdesk if your speed is lower than:

  • 10mbit connection - expect average of 5mbit, below 3 is cause for concern
  • 100mbit connection - expect average of 50mbit, below 30 is cause for concern

Network Performance Troubleshooting Tips

Why is the network slow?

We prioritize traffic so we don't have to block particular programs. File sharing programs receive the lowest priority. Remember, your Internet access is first and foremost for educational purposes.

How do I lower/control my bandwidth use?

  • Disable your file sharing programs so that people can't download files off your computer.
  • Download fewer/smaller files.
  • Transfer and download large files during off peak hours (2am-10am).
  • Avoid running FTP servers with lots of content.
  • Be cautious of watching streaming media or viewing digital movies on web sites.
